I travelled to Cairns expecting the Great Barrier Reef to be one of the highlights of Australia. The experience wasn’t quite what I imagined, but between the Reef, an unexpected cathedral, hundreds of city-centre bats and the Cairns Esplanade, it became a memorable visit for very different reasons.
