Jianbing Guozi – street food breakfast in Xi’an

Updated: April 2026

One of the best street foods I have ever eaten was jianbing guozi — a traditional breakfast in Xi’an.

It was delicious. I mean seriously good.

We arrived in Xi’an early in the morning, and as our hotel rooms weren’t ready, our guide took us straight to a local street food stall for breakfast.

She told us it was very good and she was absolutely right. We all loved it.

Jianbing guozi is a kind of savoury pancake or crepe, cooked fresh in front of you on a hot griddle. It’s made with egg, vegetables, sauces, and spices, all layered together and folded into something surprisingly filling.

None of us could actually finish a whole one. We ended up sharing!

But what made it even more special was the experience itself.

Standing by the street vendor at 7:30 in the morning, watching it being made and eating it right there on the pavement. It felt simple, local, and completely authentic.

If you enjoy trying local street food when you travel, Xi’an is a great place to start. The variety, flavours, and atmosphere make it an experience in itself.

I found that even a simple breakfast like jianbing guozi became a memorable part of my journey, not just for the taste, but for the connection with local life.

If you ever find yourself in Xi’an, this is something you really should try.  Just ask your hotel or guide to point you to a good local spot and go early.
