Tower Bridge Glass Floor Experience, London
2 June 2019
Updated: April 2026
There is something quite special about being a tourist in your own country. You begin to see familiar places differently with fresh curiosity and a sense of adventure.
If you ever have a few hours to spare in London, I would highly recommend a visit to Tower Bridge and its Engine Rooms. What starts as a simple sightseeing stop quickly turns into a memorable experience especially when you find yourself walking across a glass floor, high above the River Thames.
Here are some Funky Facts!

A London Icon — With a Twist
Tower Bridge, located next to the Tower of London, is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. Spanning the River Thames, the bridge still opens to allow ships to pass — an impressive sight if you’re lucky enough to catch it.
But what makes this visit truly unique is what happens above the bridge.

The Glass Floor — Would I Do It?
I must admit… I needed a little encouragement.
Standing above the glass walkway and looking down at the traffic and river below is not something you take lightly at least, not at first! A friendly attendant cheered me on and even gave me a badge. That did it.
I thought to myself: If a seven-year-old can do it… Mollywozhere can too!
And across I went.
The glass is, of course, completely solid and safe but your mind takes a moment to catch up! Once you do, it becomes quite exhilarating.
To make it even more fun, mirrors are positioned above the walkway — perfect for those all-important selfies. And yes… people get very creative! Sitting, squatting, lying flat — all in pursuit of the perfect shot.
I just about managed it standing up!

A Surprise Along the Way
As if the experience wasn’t memorable enough, we were lucky to visit on a day when a small circus group was performing nearby.
It was fascinating watching them entertain in such a compact space — a completely unexpected bonus that added to the atmosphere of the day.
Step Back in Time — The Engine Rooms
No visit to Tower Bridge is complete without exploring the Engine Rooms.
Here, you can see the beautifully restored Victorian hydraulic engines that once powered the lifting of the bridge. It’s a wonderful contrast — from modern glass walkways above, to the engineering brilliance of the past below.
Making a Day of It — Buckingham Palace & Leonardo da Vinci
We decided to make a full day of it by combining our Tower Bridge visit with an exhibition at Buckingham Palace — Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing.
The exhibition brought together a remarkable collection of Leonardo’s drawings, discovered in his studio after his death. His curiosity knew no limits, from art to anatomy, science to engineering.
I was particularly fascinated by his studies of the human skull — intricate, detailed, and far ahead of his time. Naturally, I left with a fridge magnet.

A Day Well Spent in London
All in all, it was a truly lovely day out in London — relaxed, interesting, and full of small surprises.
And here’s a little bonus tip: Your Tower Bridge ticket can be stamped and reused within a year, giving you the perfect excuse to return.
Because sometimes, the best experiences aren’t far away at all. They’re right on your doorstep, just waiting to be rediscovered
