Stepping Into The Void – Aiguille du Midi, French Alps

What an experience.
A true once-in-a-lifetime momentand not for the faint-hearted.
Stepping into the Void at Aiguille du Midi is one of those experiences that tests your courage in ways you don’t quite expect. The adrenaline? Almost impossible to describe.
If you’re wondering whether stepping into the glass box is scary, safe, or actually worth it, I had exactly the same thoughts before I took that first step.
Perched at 3,842 metres on the Aiguille du Midi, the glass box suspends you over more than 1,000 metres of open air beneath your feet.
What to expect
A glass box suspended over the Alps at 3,842 metres
Stunning panoramic views of Mont Blanc
A short queue and controlled entry system
Completely enclosed and safe, despite how it feels
That moment of hesitation before stepping in — the real challenge
More Than Just Skiing
Chamonix isn’t only for skiers — far from it.
I don’t ski, yet I found more than enough to fill my days:
The charming Montenvers railway to the Mer de Glace
Paragliding over the valley
Husky sledding (yes, really!)
Gentle walks through the town
Exploring an ice cave carved into the glacier
But the highlight — without question — was the cable car journey up to Aiguille du Midi.
The Journey Up — Where It Begins
I travelled with two girlfriends in the summer, celebrating a birthdaythough I don’t think any of us quite realised what we were about to experience!
The ascent itself is part of the adventure.
The cable car climbs steadily, stopping halfway where you can pause, take in the views, andimportantly — gather your courage for what lies ahead.
Then comes the final stretch. And for me, it was the lift.
A small lift, cut directly through the mountain. Enclosed. Narrow. Slightly unnerving.
I remember thinking: What happens if this stops? Quickly followed by: Don’t think about it… just don’t think about it.
Eyes closed. Deep breath. Up we went.
What it actually feels like to step into the Void
And then… the moment.
A glass box. Suspended over a 1,000-metre drop. Nothing beneath you but air.
You walk through a narrow steel gallery, heart pounding, watching others ahead of you — some laughing, some hesitating and then suddenly… it’s your turn.
They give you special slippers to protect the glass.
And then you step in.
Or at least… you try to.
Because something happens in your brain.
It says: No. Your legs wobble. Your stomach flips. And yet… somehow… you do it anyway.
And yes — I did it.
That’s me on the left — proof I actually went through with it!

Breathtaking — In Every Sense
Once your heart rate settles (eventually!), you begin to take it all in.
The views across the Alps are extraordinary — vast, powerful, humbling.
Even in summer, there was snow on the peaks and a sharp chill in the air. We wrapped up warm and wandered between the panoramic terraces, just absorbing the moment.
It’s one of those places that makes you feel very small, in the best possible way.
Would I Do It Again?
Without hesitation — though I might still pause at that very first step.
If you’re looking for something daring, exhilarating, and completely unforgettable — this is it.
And they say facing your fears builds confidence… well, mine went up about 1,000%.
